Searching databases – misspelt names

Searching databases – misspelt names

When searching databases or online digitised newspapers remember that names can be misspelt so if the correct spelling returns no matches try searching for different variations of a name eg for surnames think of the different ways it might be spelt, eg Clark or Clarke.

I searched the digitised version of the Brisbane Courier on the NLA website, http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home , for the name Stuart Tichborne but there were no matches.  I then searched under just the surname Tichborne and discovered the newspaper reporter had misspelt the name Stuart as Stewart.  In the death index his name is listed as Stuart.
