Police Gazettes
Police gazettes are an often overlooked but very rich source of family history informatiom, particularly when searching for an ancestor who seems to have disappeared without a trace.
In addition to detailed descriptions of criminals and their activities the gazettes include information and descriptions of:
- missing people
- mortuary returns (inquests)
- deserters of wives and children
- military and ship deserters
- licence holders
- police personnel
- victims of crime
Finding that your ancestor had a brown horse stolen from him at Charters Towers in July 1875 may be just the clue you need to pick up the trail again.
The State Library holds police gazettes for Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

A selection of police gazettes from various states is available online through findmypast (Australia) at http://www.findmypast.com.au/?ukwid=236883. It is a subscription database which is currently offering a 24 hour free trial.

It isn't on Ancestry.com as far as I know but you be accessing it through World Vital Records,now called findmypast (Australia)
