Pioneer registers - why are they useful?

Many family and local history groups have collated and published pioneer registers for their district.  These registers contain biographical and genealogical details of many of the early settlers who resided in that district.

Here is a small sample of some of the pioneer registers held by the State Library of Queensland:

Queensland

  • Ipswich and district pioneer register pre 1914 (2 vols)
  • Darling Downs biographical register to 1900 (2 vols)
  • Maryborough pioneers 1848-1868
  • Far North Queensland pioneer register to 1940
  • Gympie pioneer register : pre 1900
  • Central Queensland pioneer register (Rockhampton)

NSW

  • Illawarra pioneers : pre 1920
  • Coonabarabran pioneer register to 1900
  • Pioneers & settlers of Lake Macquarie
  • Pioneer register of New England from first settlement to Federation
  • Pioneer register pre-Federation for the Bega Valley Shire
  • Griffith & district pioneers : a biographical register (4 vols)

What's new in slq family history resources

Wondering what the State Library of Queensland has added to their family history collection lately?

Well, wonder no more.  The collection is added to continually through out the year, and covers a wide range of subjects including cemeteries, pioneer registers and newspaper indexes connected to Australia and beyond. They are in different formats: books, CD-ROMs, microfiche and microfilm. The resources compliment what is already held.
