Where are you going with your family history and how?

Are you a family tree climber, a traditional genealogist or a generational historian?

Elizabeth Shown Mills argues for a clearer sense of identity and standards in genealogy. Her ideas might prompt you in your research.

In her article, ‘Genealogy in the Information Age: history’s new frontier?’

http://www.ngsgenealogy.org/galleries/Ref_Researching/NGSQVol91Pg26077GenealogyHistory.pdf she argues for a “history in microcosm”.

Family history is often characterised as an ‘ego trip”, “history lite”, and just “personal fulfilment”; researchers are seen as “data sweepers for real historians”.

What do you want after your investment of time, money and enthusiasm?

The State Library holds 2 of her books. You might want to check the catalogue http://onesearch.slq.qld.gov.au/ to see if they can assist you.

Stephanie This is a great article - thanks for posting. Some very salutary observations indeed. To quote ... "John Grabowski—a historian turned archivist—noted that genealogists were the fastest-growing group of researchers and that their lobbying efforts had saved archives, records, and budgets." and "Genealogy is no longer a mere ego trip. It is a vital form of education that no other branch of history can match, because it teaches a powerful truth: None of us can harbor prejudice against another group of people when we realize that, with the very next document we find, we could be a part of them." I'm pleased the State Library has a sense of the options in family history. We are not just told what we must do. Annie

Annie We aim to cater for the widest range of options in the resources we select. We do not want to limit what you do but help you do the best family history you are interested in doing. Stephanie
