Pineapple supreme, 1959

Harvesting a pineapple crop at the Hallett brothers' farm at Brookfield, in Brisbane's west. In the 1950s pineapple harvesting and canning provided migrants with backbreaking but financially rewarding seasonal employment. One Brisbane cannery processed up to 600 000 pineapples a day and employed up to 1600 workers during the summer months.This photograph comes from the collection of the National Archives of Australia.
