Talk @ SLQ : Documenting Queensland’s wartime heritage
Tripping over concrete slabs: Documenting Queensland’s wartime heritage
Have you ever found weathered concrete structures in the scrub or near the beach in Queensland, and wondered what they were? The Department of Public Works has designed a website: Queensland WWII Historic Places to answer questions about Queensland’s World War II sites.
As part of the project Dr Jack Ford, Brian Rough and Dr Brian Sinclair collected images, maps and information for a number of WWII places in Brisbane and South East Queensland. Join them as they discuss their research methods and the various types of wartime sites they uncovered.
Brian Rough and Jack Ford are both long serving, experienced historians with the Brisbane City Council’s Heritage Unit, and have an interest in military history. Brian was a major contributor to the work Brisbane, 150 Stories: 1859-2009; while Jack has published Allies in a bind: Australia and the Netherlands East Indies in the second World War. Brian Sinclair is a Senior Heritage Officer in the Heritage Branch, Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM). He researches a variety of places nominated for entry in the Queensland Heritage Register, but is particularly fond of military sites. All three have worked together recently as contributors to the multi-author book A Most Promising Corps: Citizen Soldiers in Colonial Queensland, 1860-1903.

Talk @ SLQ: Ernie Lane: The making of a Queensland Rebel
In the pioneering years of the Queensland labour movement, Ernest Henry Lane was one of the most fiery firebrands of them all. Yet he was shipped to Brisbane in 1884 as a model immigrant, an industrious young man who carried the convictions of a childhood steeped in loyalty to Queen and empire. So what went wrong? In this talk, John Oxley Library Fellow Dr Jeff Rickertt delves into the turbulent world of colonial labour politics to explain the making of Ernie Lane as one of the nation’s most resolute rebels.
Dr Rickertt is a Brisbane historian with an abiding interest in the State’s rebels and radicals. He was a contributor to and assistant editor of Radical Brisbane: An Unruly History and is co-editor of the Queensland Journal of Labour History. As the 2010 John Oxley Library Fellow, a Queensland Library Foundation initiative, Dr Rickertt is working on a political biography of Ernest Henry Lane.
When: Wednesday 20 July - 12:30pm
Venue: State Library of Queensland, slq Auditorium 2, level 2
Cost: Free

Talk @ SLQ: Wrecked - A survey of shipwreck sites on the Queensland coast
Free talk at the State Library of Queensland
Wrecked - A survey of shipwreck sites on the Queensland coast, with Paddy Waterson - 20 April
Throughout history, Queensland’s treacherous coastline has claimed nearly 1,400 vessels. The maritime industry is at the heart of Queensland’s and Australia’s historic development and shipping was the principal mode of transport for goods and people until well into the 20th Century. The high volume of sea trade coupled with the treacherous nature of our coastline resulted in many vessels being lost or abandoned. Today, these shipwrecks continue to attract attention, both from a historical and a tourism viewpoint. Yet, despite its profile there is much we do not know about our maritime heritage. The Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) is conducting a five year survey of Queensland’s historic shipwrecks to draw together all the available information, establishing a more complete picture of where the wrecks are and what they can tell us. Join Paddy Waterson, Queensland’s appointed historical shipwreck practitioner, as he brings some of these stories to the surface.Paddy is a Principal Heritage Officer with the Heritage Branch, DERM, and has worked throughout Queensland, especially in the Far North, Wide Bay/Burnett and South-Eastern Districts. Initially trained as a general archaeologist/historian, Paddy has since completed postgraduate qualifications in forensic osteology and maritime archaeology. When: Wed 20 Apr, 12.30pmWhere: State Library of Queensland, slq Auditorium 2, level 2 (bring your lunch)Tickets: Free, no bookings required

The National Archives holds many records relating to citizenship and naturalisation.
This image is part of the Immigration Photographic Archive, comprising approximately 36,000 photographs. From 1945, the Australian Government employed photographers to record the arrival and resettlement of migrants and their integration into the Australian community. These photographs were used to advertise and promote Australia to potential migrants, to illustrate reports and other publications, and as a resource for research into immigration.
