The British Royals: a Queensland story

Queensland State Archives has launched a new foyer and online exhibition on the British Royals in early June 2011.

Since 1868, there have been around 39 royal visits to Queensland by the British royal family, with HM Queen Elizabeth II the only reigning monarch to have come to Queensland. Her first official trip to Australia took place over 55 years ago, in 1954, the year following her 1953 coronation. In March 2011 HRH Prince William visited Queensland to tour places damaged by floods and Cyclone Yasi.

Queensland State Archives engaged an historian to explore its collection and write an historical essay on the royal visits to Queensland. Read more about the history and see photos of the royals -

Showcase of Torres Strait history and culture

Torres Strait Islands: A Celebration

Arts Minister Rachel Nolan has announced what's believed to be a world-first exhibition to be held in Brisbane featuring Torres Strait Islander arts and culture on a size and scale never before brought together.

Uniting all the arts organisations in the South Bank precinct for the first time, the landmark celebration will feature art collections, performances, lectures and activities for all ages from July 1 to October 23.

“Torres Strait Islands: A Celebration is the most extensive and inclusive celebration of Torres Strait Islander arts and culture ever mounted in Australia or anywhere else in the world,” Ms Nolan said.

“It is a huge undertaking with our Cultural Centre organisations — Queensland Museum South Bank, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), State Library of Queensland, Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) — all joining forces,” she said.

For further information on this event check out the Torres Strait Islands: A Celebration website - http://www.tsi.org.au/
