Obituaries Australia http://oa.anu.edu.au/ is a digital repository of obituaries published in newspapers, journals, magazines and bulletins recording the life stories of Australians from the earliest times to the present.

 

While the ADB focuses on the lives of notable Australians, Obituaries Australia provides published obituaries relevant to the history of Australia.

 

Search by occupation, life dates, birthplace, religion, ethnicity, author and source.

Australia has been involved in many international conflicts starting with the Boer War in South Africa, then WW1, WW2, Korean War, Vietnam War and more recently in peacekeeping missions. There is a strong possibility therefore that one or more of your ancestors will have served in the military. There is a vast amount of information now available on-line to trace your ancestors’ military past. This course outlines what records may be available and details where and how to find them in Australia and the UK.

 

Cost:              $10 for GSQ members and $13 for non-members

Time:             9.30am to 11.45am

ü  Parish Registers

ü  Immigration

ü  Help and guidance

           

The presenters focus on Australia, UK, Ireland, and Scotland but are able to provide guidance on researching in other regions.

WWII Escapers & Evaders on findmypast.co.uk

You can now search 10,529 records of WWII Escapers & Evaders on findmypast.co.uk

These records are individual reports for allied service personnel about their experiences of escaping from prisoner of war camps or evading capture in Central Europe throughout WWII.

Each entry will tell you the following key information about your ancestor: name, rank, number, corps and reference to the original paper file at The National Archives in Kew.

You may also be able to learn details of your ancestor's decorations, date of capture, the camp in which they were held and/or the date of escape.

Free onsite access to findmypast.com.au and findmypast.co.uk is available at the State Library of Queensland.
