Seydlitz June 1910

We received an enquiry recently about a photograph in the Queenslander of German immigrants who arrived in Sydney on the Seydlitz in June 1910 and then travelled to Brisbane by the coaster, Gabo. It became an interesting reminder of the range of Brisbane newspapers we hold.

Were the people in the photograph named?

No but there was an article about their arrival several pages away. In addition the Brisbane Courier, Telegraph and Sun had articles. Only the Telegraph lacked a photograph. In the Sun (12 June 1910 p5), 5 photographs included the 2 pastors who were photographed separately and named. There were two photographs of the children, one of which I have included here and 1 group photograph.

It’s a reminder to check beyond the Courier. Until the last 20 years or so Brisbane usually had at least 2 newspapers at any one time.

How is it possible to find out what newspapers SLQ holds?

·        Check the catalogue

·        Check the finding aids at the Desk (back of Level 3): Newspapers by place and Newspapers by title.

How do I find immigration and shipping reports?

·        This is easy for some newspapers such as the years of the Courier to 1900 because the National Library has digitised it so the paper is keyword searchable at http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home.

·        There are also Ian Nicholson’s 3 volumes, Log of logs.

·        Family history also maintains an index of reports from a number of sources in the Shipping news which is updated periodically.
