Irish in Queensland: their cultural legacy - Talk @ SLQ

Free lunchtime talk on the history of Irish people in Queensland - 14 March

Many Queenslanders can trace their ancestry back to Ireland due to the vigorous programs of migration in the 19th century that enticed working class Irish men and women to our shores. Historian Dr Jennifer Harrison and Director of Mercy Heritage Centre Peter Connell will discuss how the Irish have left their mark on the Queensland consciousness.

This is an Out of the Port free lunchtime talk, presented by State Library’s John Oxley Library and the Department of Environmental and Resource Management.

When: Wed 14 Mar 2012, 12:30 pm -

Venue:State Library of Queensland, slq Auditorium 1, level 2

Ever heard of a Nissen hut?

Once Nissen huts or Igloos were the main stay for the War effort during WWII and several hundred were constructed from one end of the state to the other, with many in Brisbane.  Few remain today, some has been altered over time.

One hut remains in near WWII condition and that can be found at the Amberley Air Base west of Brisbane and it is now Heritage listed.

The National Archives of Australia is holding a seminar which looks at buildings and sites which have now been recognised as a Commonwealth Heritage Sites and this includes a Nissen Hut.  The Seminar will be looking at some other significant Heritage places in Queensland.  The Archives hold records and plans for many of the Commonwealth places.

It is a free seminar and will be held from 10am on Wednesday 15 February 2012 and will be repeated on Saturday 18 February 2012.  The seminars run for approximately an hour and there is a complimentary morning tea.

More microfilm available: level 3 reading room

Are you frustrated at having to order microfilm from the repository?

Good news! Much more film is on the shelves leading into the reading room at the back of level 3.

Most of the titles are newspapers:

  • the major Australian dailies such as the Australian, Australian Financial Review and West Australian
  • The New Zealand Herald
  • Queensland titles including 21 titles for the Burnett region.

How to find out what is now available in the reading room.

Check the cataloguehttp://onesearch.slq.qld.gov.au/  There is an option to use the previous catalogue if you are more comfortable with it.

Use the name of the town or region, 'newspapers' and 'microform'. If you search for 'Burnett' without adding 'newspapers' and 'microform' you will get 976 titles instead of the 21 newspaper titles.

If the location code is MFS/B the microfilm is on the newly available shelving as you walk into the reading room.

If the location code is MFS the microfim is inside the reading room.

We also have booklets in the reading room listing newspapers by title and newspapers by place.

The newspapers extend beyond the Trove cutoff date of 1954, in hard copy if not on film.

There is of course much, much more available......

Check:

our website http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/info/fh

Surveying Success: The Hume Family in Colonial Queensland

Dr Hilary Davies launched her book Surveying Success: The Hume Family in Colonial Queensland at the Museum of Lands, Mapping and Surveying on 19 November 2011. This case study of middle-class social mobility in colonial Queensland is an in-depth biography of an important Queensland family and reveals the workings of colonial society against the economic and political backdrop of the late 19th century.

After serving in the merchant marine with the P&O Line, Walter Hume migrated to Queensland from England in 1862 to train as a surveyor. Soon he was joined by his widowed mother and four siblings, then in 1866 by his fiancée, Katie Fowler. The varying fortunes of each family member reveal how personality, background and the social, economic and political conditions in the colony determined their success. Walter and Katie Hume coped with isolation from family and the deaths of five infants while working to establish their financial future, secure promotions for Walter and create a place for themselves among the colonial elite. They attained the ideal middle-class family life with Walter’s career success providing sufficient income to educate their children overseas, reside in elite homes and engage in genteel and philanthropic pastimes. In 1901, following almost four decades of service in the Department of Public Lands, Walter returned to England with his family and commenced travelling widely. They visited family and friends from India to Argentina, returning once more to Queensland in 1907 where they noted many changes since federation.

Copies are available via the Brisbane History Group website http://www.brisbanehistory.asn.au/bhgpub.html for $35 plus postage or through Boolarong Press @ www.boolarongpress.com.au

Beneath the veneer: furnishing Queensland interiors- podcast

Colonial Australians were generally known for their staunch loyalty to British goods and fashions for the furnishing of their home interiors. As the Australian colonies approached Federation, growing local manufacturers, including furnishings businesses, argued that a new nationalist loyalty should drive consumers to "buy local".

In this podcast Tracey Avery focusses on the complex issues of politics, climate, labour and economics that impacted on the furnishing choices of Queenslanders.

Tracey is Director, Strategy and Policy at Heritage Victoria, a Victorian State Government agency within the Department of Planning and Community Development. She was a Co-Project and Curatorial Manager, James Cook Museum, Cooktown for the National Trust of Queensland and was Cultural Heritage Manager at the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).

Waipara on the Waves to Queensland

The Waipara brought thousands of immigrants to Queensland 1904-1916.Their departure and arrival was captured in images. In the period 1910-1912, the Brisbane Courier and the Queenslander not only reported on the journeys but also used photographs of passengers leaving Scotland by train to the English ports, boarding the ship, arriving in Brisbane and then at the immigration depot at Kangaroo Point. There are also images of groups of passengers from the vessel.

Find out what is available in these newspapers on Trove http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper It is possible to select ‘illustrated articles only’

Did your ancestors come on the Waipara? We would love to hear your story. Email us at genie@slq.qld.gov.au

Tell us your Torilla story

It is a century since the arrival of the migrant ship, Torilla. It arrived in Brisbane 10 October 1911 on its one immigrant journey to Queensland, having dropped passengers at the major ports on the way down the coast. It was notable for the number of passengers it brought to Queensland, over 1600.There was also the tragedy of the death of 2 passengers, Mr and Mrs Munro who sought work as soon as they arrived. They were the parents of 4 young childrenWe want to hear your family’s stories if they were connected with this vessel. Send it to us at genie@slq.qld.gov.au

I'm interested in the pictures. It's not easy to see them on the Nnub. Can I get a better view of them? Are there more? What else can I find about the Torilla? Brian

Comment added 4pm, Saturday 24th Sep 11 by "Brian Jones"

The images used in this posting are in the Brisbane Courier 14 October p12. There are also pictures of the luggage and passengers from the Torilla being delivered to the Kangaroo Point Immigration depot in the Queenslander 21 October 1911 p23. The Torilla was out in the bay, far too big to come into the city wharves. Lighters were used as transport to the city. You can search these on Trove http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper The Daily Mail, which is not on Trove, had a picture of the Torilla 11 October 1911 p7. The Library has 3 editions of the Torilla Trumpet, the ship's newspaper plus lots of passenger paperwork - baggage allowance, tickets and so on. You can get an enlarged image of the pictures on the Nnub by clicking on them. Stephanie

I believe the Torilla was an unusually shaped ship. Where can I find out more about her design? Anne Simpson

Comment added 12pm, Sunday 2nd Oct 11 by "Anne Simpson"

The State Library has a wonderful collection of books about ships. The Torilla was built to carry horses rather than people and this is reflected in its design. Two sources which you would find helpful are B.I. centenary, 1856-1956 / by George Blake and B.I. the British India Steam Navigation Company Limited / W. A. Laxon and F. W. Perry. Stephanie

Comment added 10am, Monday 3rd Oct 11 by "Stephanie Ryan"

My grandparents, Alexander and Jeannie Ann Leslie Smith (nee Morgan) emmigrated to Australia on board the Torilla arriving in Brisbane on the 10/10/1911. The left the Banff area in Scotland with their 4 children including my father who was 3 years old at the time. On arrival the family moved to the township of Loch Lomond on the darling downs to carry on farming. I can imagine their dissapointment when they arrived at Loch Lomond and found it to be nothing like it's namesake in Scotland. It was only a couple of years later that the family moved to Ballina in NSW.

The British Royals: a Queensland story

Queensland State Archives has launched a new foyer and online exhibition on the British Royals in early June 2011.

Since 1868, there have been around 39 royal visits to Queensland by the British royal family, with HM Queen Elizabeth II the only reigning monarch to have come to Queensland. Her first official trip to Australia took place over 55 years ago, in 1954, the year following her 1953 coronation. In March 2011 HRH Prince William visited Queensland to tour places damaged by floods and Cyclone Yasi.

Queensland State Archives engaged an historian to explore its collection and write an historical essay on the royal visits to Queensland. Read more about the history and see photos of the royals -

The sad tale of Thomas Beynon - stories from the records

Thomas Beynon was born 18 May 1864 at Graig y Bedw, in the Parish of Llangynwyd, County of Glamorganshire, Wales. He was the second son of parents Thomas and Sarah Beynon, nee Williams. His mother died in 1874 of tuberculosis; his father remarried in 1881, to Mary. This secord marriage produced a daughter, Margaret.

Prior to immigrating to Australia, Thomas was working as a coalminer, living in Glyncorrwg, Glamorganshire. He decided to immigrate to seek a better life, selecting the goldmines of Australia as his future. He left his family, and his sweetheart Jennet Popham, heading for Gravesend to board the Duke of Buckingham. He left with the hope that Jennet would join him in Australia once he was settled.

Thomas arrived in Maryborough in January 1886, from where he made his way to Gympie. It was while employed at the Crown and Pheonix Mine that Thomas Beynon died after sustaining severe head injuries in a mining accident; while ascending the mine shaft a cage guide sprung out and hit him in the face. He died in Gympie hospital on 12 April 1886. He was buried the following day at the King Street and Tozer Park Road Cemetery.

During his voyage to Queensland onboard the ship Duke of Buckingham, Thomas kept a diary recording the weather and his interactions with and observation of other passengers. The diary was donated to the State Library of Queensland several years ago by descendants of Thomas' family. You can read a digitised copy of the diary online at http://hdl.handle.net/10462/eadarc/7405  and then click on the thumbnail.

You can also find Thomas' death listed in our index to Queensland mining accidents at http://fhr.slq.qld.gov.au/minacc/

Shipboard diaries and family history

Shipboard diaries can be a fantastic resource for family historians as they provide a fascinating insight into life and conditions on board migrant vessels.

The State Library of Queensland's John Oxley Library collection contains many shipboard diaries. A sample of six shipboard diaries have been digitised and can be viewed online.

These include:

  • Diary of Maria Steley, aged 14, written on board the ship “Ariadne” and at the North Stradbroke Island quarantine camp between 6 October 1863 and 23 February 1864. In this diary, Maria records daily activities on board ship, as well as ‘useful hints’ addressed to a friend about what to bring when migrating to Australia.
  • Diary of William A Smith written on board the ship “Young Australia” between 9 May and 13 August 1864. Smith describes the activities that passengers were engaged in during the voyage, such as reading, gambling, cards, drafts and chess.

You can find other shipboard diaries by searching "Manuscripts Queensland"  - http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/coll/qhist/manq

SLQ podcast: shipwreck sites on the Queensland coast

Wrecked! A survey of shipwreck sites on the Queensland coast, with Paddy Waterson

Throughout history, Queensland’s treacherous coastline has claimed nearly 1,400 vessels. The maritime industry is at the heart of Queensland’s and Australia’s historic development and shipping was the principal mode of transport for goods and people until well into the 20th Century.

Listen to Paddy Waterson, Queensland’s appointed historical shipwreck practitioner, as he brings some of these stories to the surface. Paddy is a Principal Heritage Officer with the Heritage Branch, DERM, and has worked throughout Queensland, especially in the Far North, Wide Bay/Burnett and South-Eastern Districts.

Index to miners involved in Queensland mining accidents (1882-1900)

Queensland mining accidents were published annually in the Queensland Legislative Assembly Votes and Proceedings (later known as Queensland Parliamentary Papers) from 1882 to 1945.

An index to miners involved in Queensland mining accidents from 1882 to 1900 can be searched via the State Library of Queensland’s website at http://fhr.slq.qld.gov.au/minacc

(An index to mining accidents for the period 1901-1930 is under development.)

Each entry records the date of the accident, the name of the mine where the accident took place and a remarks column which briefly details the accidents. The source column refers to the year, volume and page number in the Queensland Legislative Assembly Votes and Proceedings (e.g.1901/4/464 is 1901, volume 4, page 464). The Queensland Legislative Assembly Votes and Proceedings (Queensland Parliamentary Papers) is available on microfilm (MFL 328.943) at the State Library’s South Bank building on level 3.
