Queensland Post Office Directories

One of our most common questions:
Why is my ancestor not in the post office directories?
Check Rod Fisher's article Directories to people, places and patterns in Queensland since 1868 (Archives and Approaches II, BHG Paper No 7, 1988).
Rod covers the historical role of directories and specifically covers the development of the Qld Post Office directories which vary in content and publishing history. He explains how they were compiled and discusses their reliability. He covers 13 different ways they can be applied in your research and the procedures to follow.
Why is someone not listed?
He gives 9 possibilities including:
- The person was an employee not the owner of a business, which usually would be listed under the owner's name
- The person had moved elsewhere to live with family or friends, or to a boarding-house or a hotel, or to a hospital in old age or because of poor health
- The directory does not list householders if a trade directory or almanac
Find out what the others are in Archives and Approaches II G 994.31 1988 on the open shelves Level 3
