The capsizing of the Pearl ferry, 1896At 5.05pm on February 13, 1896, the steamer Pearl, acting as a ferry, was making its way across a swollen Brisbane River, when it fouled in the lines of an anchored ship and capsized near the Victoria Bridge with more than 80 on board.Writer Paul Seto, will present “The capsizing of the Pearl ferry, 1896” to discuss the story of this terrible disaster, which took the lives of more than twenty people and which shocked Brisbane’s residents. Paul has researched this event quite heavily and will use his knowledge to speak about those individuals who died on February 13, 1896 and those who assisted in the efforts to rescue passengers.The one-and-a-half hour presentation will begin at 11am on Sunday, August 28 and will provide educational and up-to-date content suitable for all audiences.The Museum opens its doors to the public on the last Sunday of each month from 10am to 3pm from February to November in addition to the standard Monday to Friday 9am to 4pm opening hours. Monthly Sunday openings feature guest speakers from across the historical and crime-solving spectrums.
