Norwegian archive goes digital

The National Archives of Norway have digitised numerous records of interest to family historians including parish registers, probate material and real estate registers. The 1910 census will be available in the next few months - check their website for details.

Google translate: an online translation wizard

Have you come across Google translate yet? It is a clever online translation tool that may prove invaluable for translating those family letters that have been passed down through the generations but that no-one can read any more because they were written in a non-English language.

Danish? Dutch? Swedish? French? Italian? Spanish?

Just start typing from your foreign language document and Google 'detects' the language in use and starts translating it immediately.

It isn't perfect of course and some of the English translations seem rather odd or stilted but it is a considerable improvement on some of the other online translation tools available.

Check it out at http://translate.google.com/#
