UK Apprentice Books now on Ancestry

Ancestry has recently released a new collection of records - UK Apprentice Books 1710-1811.

This collection contains registers of the money received for the payment on taxes for an apprentice’s indenture between 1710-1811. The registers kept track of the money paid by masters of a trade to have an apprentice. The dates in the records are for when the tax was paid and may be some years after the apprenticeship, not when it started or finished.

Until 1752, the apprentice’s parents’ names were included, but afterward are rare. The records include:

  • Sum received
  • Name of master
  • Address of master
  • Trade
  • Name of apprentice
  • Date of articles of apprenticeship

Above text was taken directly from the Ancestry Library Edition website.

Free access to Ancestry's Library Edition is available in the reading rooms of the State Library of Queensland. Access is also available at most public libraries and family/local history societies.

TNA podcast: Histories of mental health (UK)

Podcast: 'Revolting to humanity': histories of mental health

"The 19th century ushered in a new way of seeing mental health. For the first time, 'madness' was not a condition understood as an extension of the criminal or poor classes, but as a unique social group in its own right. Central government undertook the beginnings of a structured response to the way in which those suffering from mental health problems were dealt with. By examining the development of this response, it is possible to reveal snapshots of the lives touched by mental illness during this century and the beginning of the century to follow."

Do you have Huguenot ancestry?

It is estimated that 20-30% of the English population have Huguenot ancestors somewhere in their background. Most people would be unaware of this. Large numbers of migrants from the British Isles came to settle in Australia so there will be many Australians who also have Huguenot ancestry. If you find a French sounding name amongst your English or Irish ancestors there is a chance that you may be one of them.

The Huguenots were French-speaking Protestants who, subjected to religious persecution at various periods in France in the 16th to 18th centuries, sought refuge in neighbouring Protestant states, particularly England and the Netherlands.

For more information on Huguenot records please consult our information guide:http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0004/180139/SLQ_Info_Guide_3_35_-Tracing_Huguenot_heritage_-_2010_10.pdf
