First native born Catholic priest in Queensland

Recently I was asked to write an item on Father John Ryan, first native born Catholic priest in Queensland (1860-1931). It focused attention on how many church records we hold: Anglican, Presbyterian, Catholic, Hebrew, Salvation Army and Uniting to begin with.

Church records may be a source of information on an individual or family wherever they were in the state.

What sort of church records does SLQ hold?

·        Many parishes of all religions have recorded at least some part of their history, either as a separate publication or in a local history of the area. A special event or anniversary of the church might be celebrated in print and image.

·        Check Picture Queensland for a range of photographs.

·        Many religions had newspapers for at least part of their history. See the catalogue and our newspaper finding aids at the Desk (back of Level 3).

·        Check indexes to a range of parish records. These can be useful, particularly when no civil records exist.

·        The Uniting Church has lodged its records with SLQ. Enquire about these in the Heritage collections, Level 4.

·        See our information guide in the reading and on the net about parish recordshttp://www.slq.qld.gov.au/about/pub/info_guides/collections/fh

This image from the Brisbane Courier 25 May 1927 p18 gives rise to the question:

How long did it take to get so many hats at such a similar angle at the same time?
