Ever heard of a Nissen hut?
Once Nissen huts or Igloos were the main stay for the War effort during WWII and several hundred were constructed from one end of the state to the other, with many in Brisbane. Few remain today, some has been altered over time.
One hut remains in near WWII condition and that can be found at the Amberley Air Base west of Brisbane and it is now Heritage listed.
The National Archives of Australia is holding a seminar which looks at buildings and sites which have now been recognised as a Commonwealth Heritage Sites and this includes a Nissen Hut. The Seminar will be looking at some other significant Heritage places in Queensland. The Archives hold records and plans for many of the Commonwealth places.
It is a free seminar and will be held from 10am on Wednesday 15 February 2012 and will be repeated on Saturday 18 February 2012. The seminars run for approximately an hour and there is a complimentary morning tea.
