Ever heard of a Nissen hut?

Once Nissen huts or Igloos were the main stay for the War effort during WWII and several hundred were constructed from one end of the state to the other, with many in Brisbane.  Few remain today, some has been altered over time.

One hut remains in near WWII condition and that can be found at the Amberley Air Base west of Brisbane and it is now Heritage listed.

The National Archives of Australia is holding a seminar which looks at buildings and sites which have now been recognised as a Commonwealth Heritage Sites and this includes a Nissen Hut.  The Seminar will be looking at some other significant Heritage places in Queensland.  The Archives hold records and plans for many of the Commonwealth places.

It is a free seminar and will be held from 10am on Wednesday 15 February 2012 and will be repeated on Saturday 18 February 2012.  The seminars run for approximately an hour and there is a complimentary morning tea.

LOOKING FOR GWEN GILLAM GARMENTS

In 2012 the Queensland Museum is planning a retrospective exhibition on Gwen Gillam one of Brisbanes leading fashion designers in the 1950s and 1960s.

Her flagship store was in the Brisbane Arcade along side stores in the Grand Central Arcade in Queen Street and the Metro in Albert Street.

The exhibition will not only focus on the garments she designed, but will also look at the social history of Brisbane during the 1960s.

The museum is seeking to make contact with Queensland women who still may have Gwen Gillam garments hidden away in their wardrobes.

If you have such a garment or know someone who may possess such a garment please do not hesitate to contact me either by email or by phone.

Ian I've posted your notice but you might also like to submit your enquiry to the free 'Ask us' service at the Library. Go to the State Library home page www.slq.qld.gov.au You will find 'Quick links' in the middle of the page. Find the 'Ask us' option and follow the prompts. It would help if you could explain how you have arrived at the date range and if you could narrow it further. Stephanie

Ethics in genealogy

Who owns the information on your family tree?

What right to privacy do the following have:

  • the living
  • the adopted
  • the mentally ill
  • those accused of a crime?

How do you acknowledge and share information appropriately?

How do you deal with incorrect information?

These are some of the issues which cause concern to researchers.

The Australian Federation of Family History Organisations (AFFO) has a code of ethics. You can check it at http://www.affho.org/affho/ethics.php

It could save you stress, conflict and embarrassment as well as guide you to more reliable, thoughtful and honestly sourced information.

You might also like then to check Ethics in genealogy: family history & genealogy, a noticeboard for discussion of these issues and consider the dilemmas researchers find themselves in so that you can resolve your concerns in the most ethical way.

Irish military archives to release records online

Ireland's Military Archives are currently digitising a number of key collections which should delight both genealogists and historians alike. These records will be available to search online through their website - http://militaryarchives.ie/

The Military Archives has already digitised hundreds of military maps, plans and drawings and in the next few months will launch the "Bureau of Military History witness statements (1913-1921)".

The Military Archives does not hold Irish service records for those who served in the two World Wars. These records are held with The National Archives in London.

For further information on this exciting project read the following Irish Times article -  http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0103/1224309736108.html

More microfilm available: level 3 reading room

Are you frustrated at having to order microfilm from the repository?

Good news! Much more film is on the shelves leading into the reading room at the back of level 3.

Most of the titles are newspapers:

  • the major Australian dailies such as the Australian, Australian Financial Review and West Australian
  • The New Zealand Herald
  • Queensland titles including 21 titles for the Burnett region.

How to find out what is now available in the reading room.

Check the cataloguehttp://onesearch.slq.qld.gov.au/  There is an option to use the previous catalogue if you are more comfortable with it.

Use the name of the town or region, 'newspapers' and 'microform'. If you search for 'Burnett' without adding 'newspapers' and 'microform' you will get 976 titles instead of the 21 newspaper titles.

If the location code is MFS/B the microfilm is on the newly available shelving as you walk into the reading room.

If the location code is MFS the microfim is inside the reading room.

We also have booklets in the reading room listing newspapers by title and newspapers by place.

The newspapers extend beyond the Trove cutoff date of 1954, in hard copy if not on film.

There is of course much, much more available......

The first immigrant ship direct to Moreton Bay

One hundred and sixty three years ago the Artemisia, the first immigrant ship came direct to Moreton Bay. It arrived in the summer heat near Christmas.

The arrivals were keenly welcomed as a contribution to the labour supply and most were soon employed.

The Moreton Bay Courier was excited and wrote on the 16th December:THE arrival of the first immigrant vessel, direct from England, is an important event in the annals of Moreton Bay-an epoch to be often reverted to by the future historians of the northern colony. For that reason we give the good ship a place of honour in this day's issue, instead of confining our notice of her to the less conspicuous space usually occupied by our shipping intelligence.

A description of this new ship follows and the news of the imminent arrival of the first of Dr Lang's 3 vessels, the Fortitude which came the following February.

Moreton Bay was a rundown former convict colony but the Illustrated London News 12 August 1848 painted a rosier picture with descriptions of this "El Dorado" and "most interesting part of our possessions". The wages were visionary it assured the emigrants. Sketches of the vessel and its passengers were included in this edition. They are also included in Picture Australia http://www.pictureaustralia.org/. The full article is on microfilm at the State Library.

Read the coverage in the Australian papers at Trove http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper

The State Library also holds a diary of a passenger who travelled from Scotland to Deptford and then onto Brisbane.

Do you have a family story related to the Artemisia? If so let us know at genie@slq.qld.gov.au
